The Pavilion sits right on the edge of Southwark Park’s boating lake, and that setting does most of the talking. It’s bright and airy with big windows, a patio out over the water, and – on a sunny morning after a walk round the park – one of the nicer places in SE16 to sit with a coffee. One of its regulars said “looks like it should be in a lifestyle magazine,” and on the right day, they’ve got a point.
The food’s the pleasant surprise. It’s a proper little kitchen: fresh café plates, club sandwiches and salads, good cakes and pastries, sourdough pizzas fresh from the oven, and a breakfast that’s genuinely worth ordering (we’ve had it – it’s delicious). There’s decent coffee to go with it, beer on draught if you fancy a pint by the water, gelato by the scoop for the walk round the lake, and a fair spread of vegan and gluten-free options, which not every park café bothers with. The staff get a lot of love too – warm, friendly, the sort who’ll talk you through the ice cream.
Here’s the honest bit, and it’s the one thing worth knowing before you go: it’s priced as a treat, not the cheap-and-cheerful it once was. A coffee and a cake is a proper London price, and it’s the only café in the park, so you’re a little captive. But you’re paying for the setting as much as the plate – and for a slow breakfast by the water, most people decide it’s worth it.

It opens at 8am daily, roughly until 7:30pm in summer and 4pm in winter. One honest heads-up: closing tracks the park’s gates, so in practice it can shut earlier on the day, and the hours listed online aren’t always current – so don’t leave a late-afternoon visit to chance. It takes bookings.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE
Prices are on the higher side – think treat, not bargain (and it’s 50p extra for non-dairy milk). It gets busy: Saturday mornings after parkrun bring a proper queue, and on a hot sunny day the place can feel stretched, so go a little off-peak if you can. Quality’s mostly good but not flawless – the carrot cake divides people (go for a croissant), and the coffee has the odd off day. There’s air-con and heating, seating inside and out, wifi and plugs.
